Rwanda’s season is marked by a short dry season, a short wet season, a long dry season and a long wet.
Short Dry Season:
Typically occurs from mid-December to early February. This season is ideal to visit the city since weather is warm with clear clouds which makes it perfect for moving around the city and enjoying the night life in Kigali. Visitors can also enjoy the life in the mountains while hiking, nature walks with no rain, however the mountainous weather is very unpredictable it’s advisable to carry rain clothes.
Short Wet Season:
Takes place from mid-February to May, with rainfall increasing gradually during this period. During this season visitors can enjoy game drive since the park is green and beautiful with relatively short grass and a lot of animals giving birth to off springs.
Long Dry Season:
Runs from June to September, with July and August being the driest months. This is one of the best times to go gorilla trekking, as the drier weather makes hiking conditions more favorable. The park is home to the endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, volcanic caves and creator lakes. During the dry season, wildlife viewing is at its best at Akagera national Park due to very short grass. You can easily see predators hunting. Visitors can enjoy activities like boat trips, kayaking at Lake Kivu. The surrounding area also offers beautiful coffee experiences since this is the coffee harvesting time.
Long Wet Season:
Extends from September to -December, with the heaviest rainfall usually experienced from March to May. This is the best time to visit Nyungwe forest national park. This park is home to a variety of wildlife, including chimpanzees and other primates which depend on the bio diversity of this natural rain forest for food, during the rainy season there is plenty of food which makes it very easy to see the chimpanzees which are not usually easy to see due to their speed while travelling into the dense forest to look for fresh vegetation to feed on.
The best time to visit Rwanda is during the long dry season from June to September and the shorter dry season in January, as this is when the weather is the most favorable for gorilla trekking and other outdoor activities. During these months, the skies are clear and the weather is warm, making it easier to spot wildlife, and the temperatures are cooler, making it more comfortable for hiking.
